How to deal with family members not wanting to attend

What to do when you gain unexpected declines to your invitations.

You have picked the venue and you have already sent out your invitations for your big day. However, you start to notice that members of your family who are available are choosing not to come. This could be just an unfortunate coincidence that cannot be helped but for some couples this could be due to some family members not supporting the relationship.

So where do you go from here?

All depends on the relation they are to you and how much they mean to you. If it is a distant relative that you haven’t seen in years, quite frankly you could do without them and their negative views on your wedding day. If it is someone that means a lot to you that you would really would like at the wedding, see if you can get in contact with them- preferably in person. Ask them their reasons for not wanting to attend. If talked through in a calm and reasonable manner, you might be able to convince them to come or come to a compromise.

If unfortunately, they still wish not to attend, you a probably better off not having them attending the wedding as they clearly have negative views towards your relationship and the way you live your life. You may need to assess whether it is even worth them being in your life.
